Getting around Delray Beach without a car

The short answer

Can you live in downtown Delray Beach, Florida car-free? The honest, sourced answer: a free City on-demand Freebee service exists downtown but its zone and hours are not verifiably published; Tri-Rail's station is on S Congress Avenue west of I-95; there is no Brightline station in Delray Beach. What checks out, what conflicts, checked October 24, 2026.

No ranking page answers the car-free question for Delray Beach; the City’s own Freebee page returns 403 to automated fetches, so search engines and AI readers get its facts secondhand too. This page states exactly what is verified, what conflicts, and what has no published answer, as of October 24, 2026.

Freebee: real, but verify before you rely on it

The City runs a Freebee on-demand service – free rides in and around downtown – as a South Florida provider partnership. That much is on the City’s own pages. What no current fetchable page publishes: the exact service zone, current hours and the phone number. The City’s page blocks automated fetches, and the hours we saw in secondary sources conflict. Confirm zone, hours and the 855-918-3733 number with the City before you plan a commute on it.

Unverified, flagged

Freebee zone, hours and phone: not verifiable from primary pages as of Oct. 24, 2026; secondary sources conflict. Treat every specific Freebee detail you read anywhere – including the number above – as unconfirmed until the City confirms it.

Tri-Rail: S Congress Avenue, not Atlantic Avenue

The operating Tri-Rail station serving Delray Beach is on South Congress Avenue, west of I-95 – not downtown. An Atlantic Avenue station is proposed only (the Coastal Link concept); it does not exist, and nothing on this page should be read as promising it. Driving or biking from the downtown core to the S Congress station is part of every Tri-Rail trip; the station’s own schedule page is the live source for trains and fares, and it is the one transit page our research could not capture – confirm at tri-rail.com.

No Brightline in Delray Beach

There is no Brightline station in Delray Beach. The nearest Brightline stations are Boynton Beach and West Palm Beach, per our 2026-10-24 searches, which surfaced no Brightline result for Delray; verify current stops at gobrightline.com before planning. Any page implying a Delray Brightline stop is wrong.

Palm Tran

Palm Tran Route 81 serves Delray Beach. Our October 24, 2026 capture did not include the Route 81 page, so stops and schedule are unconfirmed here – check them at palmtran.org before relying on it.

Walking and the Walk Score trap

Two public Walk Score figures circulate for Delray Beach and they disagree by method and geography; neither measures the downtown core specifically. We print neither, because a wrong number is worse than an honest sentence: the Atlantic Avenue core is walkable by design – it is a street platted in 1895 to run from the Intracoastal to the ocean with the downtown’s shops, City Hall and the GreenMarket campus on it – while errands beyond it depend on where you live.

The honest verdict

A downtown Delray Beach resident can live mostly car-free for daily life – walkable core, freebee for short hops when it runs, Tri-Rail from S Congress for the region – but ‘mostly’ is doing work in that sentence: regional trips, big shopping and hurricane season all bend toward having a car or a budget for one. The commuting patterns are on our commuting page.
